QUILL Award

I won the 2011 QUILL Translation Award given by Queens Council on the Arts. The award was given at a literature reading featuring writers, poets and translators. It was the first time I had to talk in public after being introduced as a translator, thank goodness it was only a few sentences. I met some like-minded attendees who work in translation or volunteer for organizations that promote the arts, a very inspiring bunch of people.

The book I proposed to translate is not as long as my last project and has to be completed by next summer. Hope to get it done long before then!

It’s not easy to find audio recordings of opening & closing statements online, while news programs can work sometimes as a way to train, it’d be ideal to find a high quality archive for practice. Will update if there’s more available. Adding some random web vids as well, as long as they are listenable.

Notetaking Techniques for Consecutive Interpretation

Here’s an example of note-taking during consecutive interpretation. The notes are taken by the well-known interpreter Zhu Tong. Her unique system of abbreviations and symbols is fascinating and smart, when pressed for time, using symbols instead of whole sentences and words really pays off. Time to work on my own system perhaps?

Love what he’s saying:

“I encourage the translators of my books to take as much license as they feel that they need. This is not quite the heroic gesture it might seem, because I’ve learned, from working with translators over the years, that the original novel is, in a way, a translation itself. It is not, of course, translated into another language but it is a translation from the images in the author’s mind to that which he is able to put down on paper.”
